City Characteristics
  • Largest heavy industry city in the northern Chinese region; famous as the "City of Steel" through to present day
  • Bordered by Liaoyang (petrochemical city) and Shenyang (capital city) in the north

Natural Resources

Industrial Structure
  • Anshan, aka “Steel City,” is a key steel-producing city in China. Anshan Iron and Steel Group, the nation’s largest steel producing company (annual output of stone=25 million tons, steel = 8 million tons, rebar = 6 million tons) is located in the city.
  • Centered on the three representative industries of metallurgy, machinery, and textile manufacture, the city has successfully established self-supporting local industrial structures (light industry, textile manufacturing, electronics, chemical industry, construction material, and medical industry). The three representative hi-tech industries of electronic information, precision chemistry, and biologics have been also developed in the region.
  • Famous heavy industry city with total output of light and heavy industries amounting to CNY 33.78 billion and CNY 95.25 billion, respectively (26 : 74), in 2001. Output percentage of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd industries = 7.4 : 55.8 : 36.8.
Economic Tendency
  • Known as nation’s foremost steel industry city, accounting for approximately one fourth of the steel production of China. However, steel production has been in a decline over the past years due to unstable corporate structures and management systems as well as an increased unemployment ratio amid the recent economic downturn. Fortunately, it has improving since 1999 and showing signs of an upturn since 2000.
  • Industrial production has increased by 7% to CNY 10.9 billion annually with light industry tending to increase faster than heavy industry. Large and small- sized industries have increased consistently, while mid-sized industries show signs of a downturn. The industrial output in the southern region has dramatically increased compared to that of the central and provincial-controlled regions, while the agricultural industry has been increasing considerably on a consistent basis.
  • As of 2001, the output of 13 products among the 34 main Anshan products such as yellow gold, industrial boilers, paper board and mixed feed increased compared to the previous year, while that of 10 other products including Soju, dyeing materials and plastic materials decreased somewhat.
SOC (Electricity)
  • Sufficient electricity supplied primarily by thermal power, hydro power, and wind power. There are a total of 39 sub-stations (66KV) and 98 transmission circuits (total length: 1,563.3km). Gross generation = 2.55 billion KWH, as of 2001, up 15.7 % on a year-on-year basis.
SOC (Water/Sewage)
  • The total length of sewage pipes is 668km (as of 2001, decreased by 4 km compared to the previous year). Wastewater discharge and treatment volume reached 409.75 million㎥, and 86.89 million㎥, respectively. The industrial wastewater treatment ratio (94.9%) still poses serious environmental problems. Water discharge capacity = 90㎥/sec. Fee-based wastewater treatment system =0.15 KRW /ton.
SOC (Transportation)
  • Anshan City provides relatively superior transportation service with Changda Railway, Shenda Express Highway, Hada Highway passing through the region, and the Shenyang Taoxian International Airport 80km from Anshan as well as Shengao International Airport providing direct aviation routes to Beijing, Foshan in Guangdong and Huizhou. In addition, there are ports for Anshan residents with Yufayu Port in Yingkou and Lushun Port in Dalian.
    Long-distance direct buses to Beijing, Shenyang, Dandong, Changchun, Dalian, Jinzhou and Hangzhou are also available.

SOC (Communication)
  • The 2001 municipal revenue from telegram service decreased by 8% to CNY 2.07 billion on a year-on-year basis, and the number of telephone exchange reached 1 million, an increase of 35% compared to the previous year. The number of long-distance telephone circuits reached 100,770; a decrease of 8,925 compared to the previous year, while the number of telegram wire circuits increased from one to two. The number of telephone users increased dramatically to 777,000 as of late 2001.
  • More diverse forms of communication have been supplied such as public telephones, coin telephones, card telephones, and IC card telephones. The number of mobile phone users has increased to 673,000, up by 54.3% on a yearly basis.
