As the final recital of the so-called Education on Traditional Music for Children and Youths in Ansan Multicultural District that was started in October, the Ansan City Traditional Music Orchestra opened its Darakbang Traditional Korean Music Playground on Dec. 26 at Dalmaji Theater of Ansan Arts Center.
The educational project focuses on education on traditional Korean music for youths provided by the orchestra. Its aim is to help children living in the multicultural district to learn how to play traditional Korean musical instruments as well as learn about traditional Korean culture, so that they can better understand Korea and the community through music.
Students from three elementary schools participated in the program, which offered 15 classes on seven instruments including the gayageum (Korean zither with twelve strings), ajaeng (seven-stringed traditional instrument) and haegeum (traditional string instrument). Orchestra members visited the schools twice a week to teach the after-school educational program.
The free recital featured individual performances and ensembles of each instrument or school. Orchestra members who taught the program also presented a congratulatory performance.
